Cambridge in 1574. It is still a medieval town, but already the colleges are established on the former prime commercial area along the River Cam, and the rest of the town is jammed uncomfortably in the eastern half.

THE MODERN LANDSCAPE

By the mid sixteenth century a combination of underlying geology and early history had imposed on the rural landscape of Mid Anglia a variety of contrasting aspects. In the north-west, the fenlands remained much as they had for centuries, a largely undrained and marshy wilderness. They provided summer grazing for cattle and sheep, endless supplies of peat, fish, wildfowl and sedge, and their meandering rivers made up for the almost total lack of adequate roads in the area. These resources were exploited by the inhabitants of the compact villages which lay all around the fen edges and on the clay islands within them.
